OCR: AM/FM Explanation of the PD reviewing system This is just a quick explanation of the ratings I'll be using when reviewing PD music disks. The reviews will consists of four main ratings, all marked out of ten : Compositions - This reflects both the overall quality, and originality of the compositions on the disk. Is it yet another remix of xxx, and even if it is, how well has it been put together ? Samples - Again this reflects the overall quality, and originality of the samples used throughout the disk. Are the samples clear from any background noise ? Are the loop-points set correctly? Didn't I see this sample on ST-01: ? These are the sort of questions I'll be asking myself when considering the overall mark. Also, even if the sample was clear from noise and original, was it appropriate for the songs in question ? Presentation This rating is a mix of two things. If the maker of the disk has chosen to include all sorts of effects that jump about in time to the music, then it will be marked accordingly. On the other hand, if the disk just runs from workbench with no special effects then it won't necessarily be marked down. This is where the second part of the rating comes into play, functionality. How easy was the disk to use ? Did you have to stand on you're head and simultaneously depress six keys with you're toes to load the next song, or did you just have to press F1 ? AM/FM rating This is the overall rating of the disk. It isn't just an averaging of the other ratings, but an overall impression. In other words, how much did I like it? Whenever possible I will review each of the songs on disk individually, and assign an overall mark to each. Obviously if the disk contains, for example, a hundred songs, it wouldn't be pratical to review each and every one. In these cases I'll pick a few songs that really stand out from the disk to review individually, and review the rest more generally. At the end of the day, I'm only writing my personal opionions and recommendations, so if you're in doubt, don't take my word for it, and check the disk out yourself. AM/FM
